Gilbert Castillo Sr.

Gilbert R. Castillo, affectionately known as Gilberto or Captain Castillo, passed away peacefully in his home on June 4, 2025, in Belen, NM, at the age of 83. Born on August 24, 1941, in Jarales, NM, Gilbert lived a life marked by devotion to his family, community, and country. He joins his beloved wife, Corrine in eternal rest just in time for what would have been their wedding anniversary on June 30. A man known for his warmth and community spirit; Gilbert was deeply rooted in his Jarales upbringing. Raised with the values imparted by his grandmother, Manuelita Castillo, and supported by his uncle and aunts, he carried these lessons into adulthood, cultivating a passion for helping others wherever needed, whether on the farm or in his professional life. Gilbert proudly served four years in the US Army. After his service, he protected the citizens of Belen as a Belen Police Officer until starting a rewarding career with the NM Correctional Department before retiring. A devoted father, Gilbert leaves behind his cherished children, Bonnie “Claudine” Castillo and Gilbert Ryan Castillo, Jr., who were his pride and joy. His legacy of love and kindness continues through them, as well as through his surviving siblings: Patsy Sandoval, Dolores Thorburn, Esther Castillo, Jennie Jaramillo, and Lydia Montano with many nieces and nephews who brought him joy. Gilbert also Preceded in death by his mother, Gregorita Castillo, his father, Ramon Castillo, sisters, Maria Luisa Castillo, brothers, Joe David and Filemon Ramon, his aunts, Eloisa, Anita, Jose, Bonnie, Isabel, and uncles, Filemon, Luis, Tomas, and Ignacio. Gilbert's presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His vibrant personality was a defining trait, making him a cherished figure in the community and among his friends. The family of Gilbert would like to express sincere gratitude and appreciation to Gilbert’s care team, specifically, Olivia Martinez for her compassion and unwavering dedication with professionalism and warmth. Olivia’s presence made a significant difference not only for Gilbert, but for his daughter, Claudine. Olvia became a lifeline and a forever friend. Oliva, the personalized care you gave was a gift and will forever be remembered. A private viewing was held on June 11th to honor his Uncle Joe’s birthday, a figure who held great significance in Gilbert's life. A funeral mass will be held on June 30th at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church, followed by a burial. Please join Claudine in honoring Gilbert’s life and her parents’ union in Heaven for lunch at 12pm at Las Dos Gringas in Belen for lunch. In honor of his memory, Gilbert's daughter, Claudine, has lovingly created a memorial garden. She welcomes fresh and artificial flowers, plants, and bird seed to grace this haven, providing her with a daily purpose to nurture it with the same love her parents bestowed upon her.
