David Martin "Hoss" Otero

1949-2026 David M. Otero, age 76, a resident of Los Lunas, NM passed away June 2, 2026, at home surrounded by his wife, Lina Otero, daughter Jessica Marquez, and granddaughter, Joclyn Nicole Marquez. Services will take place at San Clemente Catholic Church on Monday, June 15, 2026, beginning with a Visitation at 8:30 a.m., Rosary at 9:30 a.m., and Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. The Family will be hosting a reception at Sam's Place, 544 Main St. NW in Los Lunas at 1:30 p.m. He is survived by his wife, Lina; son, Chris Mendoza (Ricarda); and daughter, Jessica Marquez; Step children, Antonio Garcia Jr and Lori Ann Garcia-Ortega (Robert); grandkids Chris Jr, Domonic (Caroline), Amber, Sapphira (Roy), JR., Alajandro, Nicole Marquez; great-grandchildren, Madilyn, Maddox, Matias, Mela, Arianny, Elena, and Roy Gabriel; step grandchildren, Haley, Hannah, Tristen (Ani), Savannah, and Alexis; step great grandchildren, Josiah, Adalynn, Benjamin, Emma, Catalya, and Giovanni; brother, Manuel Otero (Michelle); sister, Rita Baca; brother-in-law,Harry Maes, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. David is preceded in death by his son, Alferes Otero; grandson, Alferes Marquez; parents, Alferes and Frances (Kika) Otero; brother, Felix Otero; sisters, Janet Maes and Carmen Cherino. He was a member of the US Navy from March 20, 1968 to April 1, 1971. David also joined VFW in 1973. He was officiated at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post as a commander from 1973 to 1975, Sr. Vice Commander in 1975, Jr. Commander and Quarter Master in 1976, Chaplin, and Trustee. Was an all-state and all-American Quartermaster for 2 years. He served on the USS Hector as a ship serviceman and trained as a barber. David also served in Vietnam. During his time in the Navy he furthered his education by obtaining NTC for Seaman, NTC for SH 3 & 2, Basic Military Requirements, MR for Petty Officer 3 & 2, and NTC for SH {B }. David received medals for National Defense service, Vietnam Service with one bronze star, and Republican of Vietnam Campaign with device. Post Quartermaster, Jack Lovato from VFW Post 9676 informed his wife, Lina, that he loved the camaraderie David had with all his fellow war-fighters. When able, David was involved in all the Post's Community Service activities and events. He would even take his granddaughter, Nicole. David told her because she was so cute people would give more money for buddy poppies. He was respected by all his fellow members of Post 9676 and many other Department of New Mexico VFW members, but most of all respected and loved by many residents of our local community. Pallbearers will be Chris Sr., Chris Jr., Domonic, JR., and Alejandro and Roy Molina. Honorary Pallbearer will be Paul Ryan.
