Delfin Chavez

1950-2015 Delfin R. Chavez, affectionately known as “Pinky”, age 65, a resident of Belen, NM passed away suddenly on Saturday, June 13, 2015 at his home with family by his side. Delfin worked as a residential and commercial painter for 25 years and was also employed by the Belen Schools. Delfin was a PFC in the United States Army as a Cannoneer in the C Battery 4th Bn 39th FA during the Vietnam War. He was awarded the National Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Vietnam Service Medal. His service to his country was one of his greatest honors. Delfin enjoyed fishing along the ditch banks while having a few beers. He also loved animals, he even adopted a Coatimundi during his Vietnam tour. He loved watching TV and recording all of his favorite TV shows. The greatest joy in his life was “his girls” Laura, Kimberly, Kaitlin, and Megan. Delfin had a special relationship with his granddaughters. They both remembered the special way he would tell them goodbye and never ever let them leave without giving him “pop pops” (kisses and hugs goodbye). Delfin was known by all for his sharp wit and sense of humor, he always left a lasting impression on all that knew him well. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Pedro Pete Chavez and Fedelina R. Chavez; brothers, Melvin and Jimmy Chavez; nephew, Arthur Chavez Jr.; sisters-in-law, Corrine and Mary Chavez; brothers-in-law, Eddie Baca and Fermin Ulibarri; father and mother-in-law, Richardo and Blacita Romero. Delfin is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Lorraine Chavez; daughter, Kimberly Carrasco and husband, Victor; granddaughters, Kaitlin Raye and Megan Rayelynn; grandsons, Estevan and Miguel; brothers, Arthur and wife, Liz and Pete Chavez; sisters, Melba Hawley, Sally and husband, Victor Tafoya, Evelyn and husband, Tony Silva, and Mary Lou Baca; in-laws, Angie and Ruben Chavez, Henry and Rosalyn Romero and Elfa Ulibarri. All services will be held at Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church, beginning with a viewing at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, June 22nd with a rosary to be recited at 6:00 p.m. A final viewing will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 23rd with a Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be held at the Santa Fe National Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. Pallbearers will be his nephews Billy Halwey, Chris Rael, Michael Silva, Ray Flores, Jared Romero, Michael Chavez, Ruben Chavez, and Keven Ulibarri. Honorary Pallbearers will be John Chavez, Anthony Silva, Veronica Martinez, Annette Saiz, Amanda Espinoza, Martha Ulibarri, Melinda Cruz, Carol Montiel, Robert Chavez, Yvonne Flores, Vincent Flores, Jana Adams, Leslie Romero, and Sonya Chavez.
